Efren “Kuya Ef!” Penaflorida Jr., of DTC a Finalist in the 2009 CNN Heroes

UPDATE: 11/22/09

Congratulations Efren “Kuya Ef!” Penaflorida Jr.! One of the top 10 CNN Heroes for the year 2009.
=============
What do children of the slums do when they have free time after a hard day’s work of scavenging for recyclables in the garbage dump? They go on cheap high sniffing solvents such as rugby to numb their senses to escape the stinking reality of their wretched life. A life fraught with misery where survival of the fittest is the norm in an environment that is so surreal where society’s refuse are recycled even spoiled foods known as Pagpag are considered a prized find to feed their malnourished body.

As if to make matters worse where their very survival depended on their scavenging skill on societies refuse children as early as 9 years old are recruited and are groomed to be gang members. Children are left on their own eking a living on the squalor of the garbage dump where they lived in shanties are easy targets and vulnerable to gangs acting like pack of wild animals preying on the weak and uneducated youths. Victims of social discrimination treated like second class citizens in their own country because of poverty they are easily enticed to join gangs.

Slum areas are not exactly in the police radar and their neighborhood is below the totem pole for protection thus juvenile gangs offer a false sense of security and protection. So rampant are these gangs that in the past 10 years, Preda reported as high as 130 youths are involved in these criminal gangs.

Efren “Kuya Ef!” Penaflorida Jr., was born and raised in the slums near the garbage dump to a tricycle driver father Efren Peñaflorida Sr and a laundrywoman mother Lucila Geronimo. The middle child of the Penaflorida couple he is no stranger to what the children of poverty is going through as he has lived and experienced the same tough slum neighborhood where he once was bullied and pressured to join gangs. Just like any other kid on the slum he has been assaulted quite a number of times by gangs and solvent sniffing kids. Yet, unlike the Tongress members easily succumbing to pressures just like the juvenile addicts on a solvent sniffing high they get their high on pork barrels, power, and privilege, Efren “Kuya Ef!” Penaflorida Jr decided early in life not to get affected and influenced by the social ills around him. A child, who knew that education is his only salvation out of this wretched existence, pursued his schooling with honors through studious perseverance earning him scholarship from World Vision Phils. A quote from DTC website:
At 16 years of age, way back in high school, F! started a youth group which aimed of diverting students’ interest from joining fraternities and gangs into making a difference at home, in school and community and do their best to excel in studies and in everything they do. Joined by classmates Jefferson Bernal and Rezcel Alconcel, they named this group Dynamic Teen Company (Making A Difference) in 1997 under the guidance and supervision of Club 8586, Inc. For several years, he was a regular “viajero” of fish crackers from Baclaran to Cavite and sells these in school to be able to help his family even then Kuya F! emerged as an everyday hero for all of the kids who know him because despite of his lack of finances, he is such a giver and a sharer of his blessings to them. The neighborhood bakery and sari-sari store is where he buys biscuits and bread for the kids with his fifty or twenty pesos in pocket. As an adviser and trainer to the youth of Dynamic Teen Company, he literally practices what he preaches with no exceptions whatsoever. There are countless stories of people, young and old, about the goodness of heart Kuya F! possesses. He is well-loved and respected by the people he touches, honored by friends and family. It is proven that others are his priority than himself.
Having no resources on hand does not stop him from pursuing his giving back to society what he can thus the Kariton Klasrum (Pushcart Classroom) was born, here is a quote from Oprah’s Angels:
In 2003, pursuing his education major in college, Efren devised an outreach project for a street school. In 2007, the Dynamic Teen Company constructed a pushcart school prototype that carries books, school materials, table and stools, first aid kits and even snacks for the kids.

Early this year, they again constructed another pushcart carrying with it a play center, hygiene materials for bathing, clothes and slippers, and food bins. They called it K4, meaning Kariton Klasrum, Klinik and Kantin (pushcart school, clinic and canteen.) Efren and his Dynamic Teens teach literacy, values and promote the basic rights of children. They bathe, clean wounds, and cut nails and hair. They travel almost five kilometers by foot around town every weekend and children flock to greet them. His K4 educators and volunteers are former juvenile delinquents themselves. He trains them weekly and helps send them into traditional schools.

Filipino skeptics were proven wrong when they thought that children were not part of nation-building. Efren and the Dynamic Teen Company have proven that real change happens when people join together and pursue their goals and live out their purpose. It’s a slow process and needs a lot of patience because they help bring forth change by touching one heart at a time.
Indeed, it is the youth that will inherit what the older generation left for them and hopefully not in the garbage dump condition at the rate trapos plunders whatever is left of the nation’s riches. Mikey Arroyo the "Marie Antoinette" defender of her mother's Le Cirque Brouhaha and Prospero Pichay ougth to take a hint or learn from Efren and his Dynamic Teen Company volunteers. So far they have touched the hearts and change the course of more than 10,000 kids and CNN Heroes recognizes the contribution of Efren “Kuya Ef!” Penaflorida Jr., and so should you by going to the site to vote for Efren “Kuya Ef!” Penaflorida Jr..

Is Korina Sanchez turning into a bridezilla?

Who needs to watch reality television show when the Philippine political and celebrity scene offers more exciting drama? Brides are suppose to be sweet, well not all but normally when one is about to march into the altar of love, love and not hate should fill the air. So what’s up with Korina Sanchez? Or better yet why is Korina Sanchez on a warpath looking for enemies when she is about to embark on a fantasy dream wedding that most little girls can only dream of? Is Korina Sanchez turning into a bridezilla? If we look at the way she seeks or looks for enemies she is probably close to it or perhaps has arrived at the honor or was it horror of being crowned as one.
Some people Like Angela Stuart think that Kris Aquino should be gagged for talking too much on what they believe was her “shallow and dumb” plan to package Noynoy complete with hair raising or rather scalp treatment to prevent hair loss. That she ought to just do it without broadcasting it to the idiot box which they feel is just too much. I just don’t know why some people makes a fuzz over it when they have in their hands the greatest invention of all time, the remote control so you can flip channels if what you see is not to your own liking or preference. Kris Aquino is one talkative lady and that is just her character which is the reason why she earns the big bucks as she has no qualms baring it all. It allows people to learn more about her personal life as she is a public figure quenching the thirst of the inquisitive minds and yet as surreal as it sounds her ways allows people to get in her thoughts and private life as if they are her friend. Unlike Korina Sanchez, Kris is not the combative confrontational kind so, if there is anyone that needed to be gagged it is none other than Korina Sanchez.

Conrado de Quiroz got the ire of the bride when he says that the groom Mar Roxas is an atat na atat (too eager) presidential wannabe based on an observation regarding media ads of the tricycle pedal kicker featuring Korina’s fiancée. While Conrado’s comment may have been moot after Mar Roxas statesman like redemption withdrawing his presidential ambition giving way to Noynoy Aquino, it just escapes me why she is demanding for an apology. I have no clue what planet Korina is on right now but in case she has not noticed most if not all the presidential wannabe are basically too eager beaver for comfort approaching illegal acts for early electioneering bombarding people with pathetic obnoxious ads geared for their presidential run.

If it makes Korina Sanchez happy we have to implore Conrado de Quiroz to apologize to Mar Roxas pronto because it seems the one who is the bigger atat na atat is none other than the frustrated first lady wannabe Korina.

Sharon Cuneta a megastar (gawd I can't believe I am saying megastar, lol) was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and yet instead of a brat like attitude in defense of Mr. Noted errrr husband Kiko Pangilinan when Korina Sanchez calls him an ingrate, shows she has more class choosing not to dignify Korina’s tirade by not responding. It makes you wonder if Mar Roxas told Korina that the presidential run is bigger than themselves and to feel betrayed on a perceived notion that Kiko Pangilinan’s support of Noynoy Aquino caused the slide of support away from Mar Roxas to just the vice presidency only shows she does not get it.

Then we have RG Cruz who made the mistake that he can poke fun in his Facebook account at the frustrated first lady Korina Sanchez, a co-worker at the “Kapamilya” (family) ABS CBN network. Talk about family eh, no wonder some people including this Political Jaywalker are not attracted at joining this “family” especially one that is so dysfunctional. In all of these incidents, she has no qualms airing it in public that her new found enemies owes her a favor like one who thinks like a queen except she is missing her crown to borrow RG Cruzes apt description should not forget they owe her a debt of gratitude. To think that she is one who believes or should we say deludes herself she can make a difference when she displays despicable traits of the political patronage. kind There goes the drama of sacrifice for love of inang bayan, looks like she is one narcissist who thinks the world revolves around her.

She could have handled this better although she is probably in a lot of pressure as most brides to be and while if this white paper really came from her she is mishandling the incidents very poorly, to quote:
While some characters would sit back, relax and ignore the nuances and irritants of daily living, some characters such as mine are the types who would see and know, by experience if I may add, that evil prospers when good men do nothing. While there is wisdom in silence, there is nobility to be found in response and courage — as foolish as some might think these to be, given specific circumstances.
True, I agree that evil prospers when good men do nothing but “good men” or women being good knows enough to act with class and not be combative because it not only validates their contention when one reacts like Korina did and worse comes up with an allege scary retort below:
So to you, RG Cruz, I say, I hope that — as your Facebook entry narrated — as you were “eating chocolate” and indulging your gastronomical cravings while events at Club Filipino on the 2nd of September 2009 were unfolding and all you could think of and delight in, as written in your Facebook, are your cruel attacks, pettiness, inanities and insensitivities to the sacrifice of others and, horror of horrors, make these public — you will, henceforth, attempt to save yourself from the very real prospect of disappearing, leaving this world without a trace, no better and even worse than when you found it.
People disappear without a trace and are never heard again when they get the ire of the powers that be, this is not something one jokes about and coming from an eager beaver wannabe first lady is a window to the future on the kind of occupant that will inhabit the palace. I am sure one happy camper not seeing Mar Roxas running for the presidency as he has a very scary bitter vindictive partner with a tendency to have anger management problem.

What is so amazing is she has no qualms showing her bitterness in not attending Mar Roxas acceptance of Noynoy Aquino’s offer to be his running mate. Fer cryin’ out loud you just loss us there Korina, it is time to move on and please stop making a spectacle of yourself as you are hurting your future hubby and dragging Noynoy down too in his impending presidential run. Think of the poor people in Payatas who believe that change is possible and with the meager or literally scarce resources they are rejecting patronage politics and showing us the way by donating whatever they have for the cause.

In the interest of "saving" inang bayan and not dampen the resurgence of hope of desperate people that are eternal victims of political hypocrisy and double talk, Korina Sanchez should figure out how she can control her temper and apologizing for her behavior is really not a bad idea. She can opt to be the way she is which is not very pleasant especially for a future bride, as in making herself a spectacle like those in reality TV show with no redeeming social value or she can still walk tall without the help of a 10 inch heels if only she tries to re-examine the folly of her confrontational attitude. Not that it is any of my business to want to see Korina change her ways but there is this possibility that she might grow old like my favorite Senator Miriam Santiago, who when angry says she her mouth is foaming, homicidal and has the urge to spit on a justice face that irates her. I dare say that it is time for Mar Roxas to drop the Mr. Palengke (Mr. Market as in economist having graduated from Wharton) packaging lest his ex-future wannabe first lady goes on a tantrum spell again if she is referred to as Mrs. Palengkera...........

Will NoyNoy Aquino pave the way for meaningful political change?

There seems to be signs that we are heading towards some major political change. I am ecstatic at the prospect and yet trying to control myself at not overreacting or reading too much at the developments. I must admit I have never been one who gets excited at Philippine elections especially the presidential and national kind. Endorsing or even voting for a presidential candidate is not exactly a good proposition based on our past experience of retrogression all these years. I am not about to change that just so I can get disappointed and lose face in the process.
Gloria Arroyo the Licking PalakaIf indeed change is coming the inevitable is about to unfold. The dawning of a new beginning is rising on the horizon that is if the Filipino voter will repudiate the tumultuous scandalous bout with food binging errrr reign of the Arroyo’s. On the other hand while we probably are seeing political manurity errrr maturity on the rise our fraudulent electoral system serves as a stumbling bloc bringing us back to where we started.

It seems that Gloria Arroyo’s ship is sinking fast despite the political merger of her cohorts errrr allies the present formidable political party into a PALAKA (frog is a perfect acronym for Partido Lakas-Kampi), all indications it appears are pointing in that direction. Some see the yellow storm is about to engulf the nation and the ship that Gloria Arroyo stirs errrr steers seems to be going against the tide of gigantic waves of an angry storm with a vengeance. Well, how big of a yellow storm Noynoy Aquino can muster in a short time remains to be seen. What with a formidable PALAKA merger licking and slurping puny opponents like flies to fill up their belly thanks to the "skills" (more of distributing the loot at the expense of the people) and savvy of the one with a sticking tongue.

Well, as we all know when the ship is about to sink the first one scrambling to bail out are rats. Alex Maligno errr Magno seems to lead the pack seeing the build up of public support pointing to Noynoy Aquino’s direction and the drawing power of the yellow revolutionist. He says the brand power of the Aquino's and loyalty of the people will change the tone of the electoral exercise leaving no room for the political midgets (I just don't know if that includes his boss literally or figuratively, you go figure) in a multi-party system. Sounding off perhaps to the other side sensing a sinking ship in an administration so wracked with never ending scandals like this latest one on Mikey Arroyo considering their administration are almost over that may ultimately be that of their political demise.

I was apprehensive at the growing clamor for Noynoy Aquino to take on the torch of an unfinished revolution started by his late parents Ninoy and Cory Aquino on the effects this will have on Mar Roxas who seems to have developed some strong padyak (kick) muscles. I know people hate unsolicited advice but I am tempted to tell Noynoy not to stand in front of Mar Roxas exposing his behind as Mar might just get tempted to try his padyak prowess, lol. Seriously, Mar Roxas is standing tall nowadays with his decision to forgo and sacrifice his presidential ambition for the sake of party unity and peoples clamor for Noynoy Aquino. Now, that is what friendship and self-sacrifice is all about and indeed very encouraging to see that unlike the greedy traditional politicians that we are so used to witnessing he has definitely distinguished himself away from the predatory horde. While Mar Roxas earned some pogi (PR) points Korina Sanchez the fiancee should not spoil it with her sour graping trying or creating enemies where there is none which can backfire more on Mar Roxas that can be seen as her convenient outlet to let go off some steam of frustration.

If Noynoy Aquino decide to take on the challenge and carry on the torch to keep the dream alive, he will need Mar Roxas by his side not just his Vice President running mate but a working partner for a very challenging road ahead. Forging a united front to confront a well oiled administration political machinery is no easy task when money of the legitimate and illegitimate source are attracted by their opponent like flies to be slurped by the frog’s elastic tongue. Money and ton loads of it even those pouring out of the Cobramen and woman’s daily collection of the Jueteng “kingmakers” will naturally support the administration bets making sure they win with the help of backdoor cheating operators to retain the status quo and their rackets intact.

The stars seems to be aligning in Noynoy Aquino’s favor as Kiko Pangilinan eying a Vice Presidential slot in the Liberal Party where Mar Roxas is the president is also giving in to pave the way for an Aquino presidential candidacy. The bigger challenges are the other opposition hopefuls like Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, deposed and convicted pardoned plunderer Joseph Estrada who will only give in to Noynoy with a precondition of seeing a united opposition. A “united’ opposition is very unlikely to happen judging from the reaction of some in the"opposition" who doubts it will happen instead of seeking ways on how to make it happen for the sake of the people.

It is a given that the Liberal Party alone will not be able to take on the PALAKA of Gloria Arroyo. The biggest challenge is how to run on a platform of change while including the old traditional politicians who just happens to be on the opposite side of the political fence? Now that is a dilemma that poses a big challenge and surely I can understand why Noynoy Aquino is agonizing in his decision because this requires not just political savvy but one requiring the skills of a master politician.

In terms of allies their best bets are the reform oriented organizations and independents like the late Raul Roco's Aksyon Democratico (Sonia Roco endorsed and pledge her late husbands party to Aquino this early), Kaya Natin’s Ed Panlilio (inclination to withdraw in favor of Noynoy pending consultations with his constituency should Aquino decides to run), Grace Padaca, and Jesse Robredo, Brother Eddie Villanueva’s Bangon Party and Ang Kapatiran’s JC de los Reyes and different party list but that again poses a challenge simply because they don’t have national political machinery combined. Assuming most of these political parties are able to sacrifice and set aside their political/ideological differences and by a stroke of miracle they were able to find a common ground the next hurdle is the ridiculous sums of money needed in a patronage based political system. An electoral system where voters expect a fiesta feast although not exactly of the Le Cirque caliber they still run in the billions of depreciated pesos. I am confident that with quality people who will step up to help in the campaign, they can definitely ihave an mpact in swaying the voters in their direction. Except for one very "inconsequential" problem, with the new computerized system no one really knows or have a slightest clue as of this writing how to safeguard the sanctity of the ballot.

We have to be optimistic and keep the dream alive, the sad experience of Among Ed Panlilio is a preview of things to come should Noynoy Aquino win the presidential election. In Pampanga you have anak ng jueteng errrr son of allege Jueteng Lord leading the Mayors league and a provincial board highly influenced by Lilia Pineda the wife of the same jueteng lord literally acting like a mob in derailing whatever positive good governance the Panlilio administration is desperately instituting.

The Philippine congress is no different populated by misfits who can't tell what is right or wrong just like Pampanga where mob rule prevails using their numbers instead of intelligent reasonable debate and these cretins are sadly the end result of our fraudulent electoral system. This is where Noynoy Aquino will have to learn from the Panlilio experience, step up and be able to lead the people towards meaningful change. Is he up to the challenge? Then he also has to figure out why we have retrogressed as if our nation was trapped in a cruel vicious cycle arriving nowhere despite the gains we had after the 1986 people power revolution. On the positive side the Aquino's has rekindled the dream and aspirations of a frustrated people so failure is not an option because we can no longer endure pathetic corrupt to the bones misfits fleecing our nation dry. On a personal level he cannot risk his family's legacy, a responsibility he owes to his parents and the reform minded people whose dreams still lives on and not turn this into a nightmare.........

If you are on Facebook there are groups that you can join such as; Noynoy for President 2010, Noy, Ikaw Na, Noynoy Aquino for President, Noynoy Aquino for President 2010 Movement, and Noynoy Aquino for President Movement, there are probably more out there that I may have missed. Will Noynoy have the same popular backing like his mother Cory Aquino? We can gauge his strength based on the success on 9/9/09 where people are urge to wear yellow to encourage Noynoy Aquino to run for president.

GMA's Clemency of Ninoy Aquinos' Murderers an Insult & Rejection of his Martyrdom

By: Fidel Umaga

Closure on Ninoy's martyrdom?

Clemency or pardon for those convicted for his death?

This is to disparage the memory of Ninoy and all those he stood for as well as an insult to those who admire him.

Ninoy was a martyr not only because of the things he died for but also for the things he lived for. He lived and died for a Philippines that is free, where Filipinos may live in justice and peace as human beings, in a democratic atmosphere, where the law is dispensed equally to all, unmindful of the economic, social, religious and political circumstances of the person involved.

He wanted us to believe as he had believed and lived that there is more to life than eating 3 square meals a day and having a roof over one's head when night comes. He wanted us to believe that it is our God given right to live in freedom, as human beings. He wanted us to believe that we must be vigilant in protecting these God given rights and that we must be willing to defend them with our whole heart and soul. And should it become necessary for us to put our own life and limb in harms way in defense of those rights, we must have the courage to meet the challenge because in the end, our country, our people and every one of us would be measured not so much by what we have but what we do with what we have.

And where are we now 26 years after Ninoy's assassination at the NAIA tarmac on August 21, 1983? Are we different now from what we were then?

No. These same tyranny reigns albeit from different tyrants.

Many of us still act like SLAVES despite the so called freedoms that we have. Poverty still haunts the country. Ignorance still abounds around us. We are still separated from our neighbors. Most of us still worshipped many because of the circumstances they were born from and not because of those they have created for themselves and others.

In a sense, as we have not yet realized the dream of Ninoy for all of us, he dies everyday. Yes, I believe there should not YET be a closure of Ninoy's martyrdom. No clemency yet for those who caused the death of Ninoy.

In the ultimate analysis, when every thing has been said and done, we, whom he died for and are still alive today but failed and continuously fail to learn from his death, are complicit in that tragedy. To deny that is to deny the greatness of Ninoy's death.

Note:

This is lifted from the comment section of the August 21, 2007 post on Ninoy Aquino's Martyrdom that still rings true to this day.

Massive Rally Demanding Gloria's Resignation

International Herald Tribune headlines' "2 former Philippine presidents join thousands at rally calling for Arroyo's resignation" estimated at 80,000 by rally organizers reduced to 15,000 by the police.... hahaha are they blind or did they apply DAGDAG (add) BAWAS (substract) Comelec counting formula?

BBC News report Ex-presidents Cory Aquino and Joseph Estrada at Philippine rally in what Correspondents say was the largest demonstration against Gloria Macapagal Arroyo since the allegations emerged weeks ago.

Thousands gather in Manila for anti-Arroyo protest, in Reuter's Carmel Crimmins report and picture by John Javellana shows massive crowds.

Philippine military warns troops from joining rally calling for president's ouster in another International Herald Tribune article reported by Associated Press only shows the regimes desperation to counter the popular clamor for Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's resignation that may turn into an ouster movement. Military chief of staff Gen. Hermogenes Esperon was quoted as saying:

A military intervention would surely weaken democratic processes and institutions. That goes against the aspiration of those who fought to regain our democracy.

Hello, in case the military backers of this lady does not notice she is the one that hinders the democratic aspiration of the people and not vice-versa.

The coup rumor and postponement of the trial against the military rebels shows that they are edgy and nervous at the prospect of having a military mutiny unlike that of the previous EDSA I opportunist group motivated purely by power grab and nothing more. This group of idealist soldiers should they succeed will hopefully distinguish themselves from the military opportunist of the past that will hold all those guilty of institutionalized corruption accountable.

Protest rallies were reported in other parts and outside of the country, dubbed as the biggest gathering so far under Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's regime. The international press is starting to cover the news events sorrounding the scandal only shows that this "political noise" is not just a noise anymore but may turn into a tsunami of people's outrage and demand for Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to be held accountable and responsible for all the scandals that points to her and her minions...... I say goodbye Gloria, heed the peoples call.....C'mon bloggers on with Gloria RESIGN! Blogswarm.

EDSA 2 Remembered

Kasama ako sa EDSA2!I just got an invitation from Mong Palatino of mongster's nest on a memorable or dishonorable event this weekened of January 19-20th, 2008 depending on how you feel about it.

Indeed, no one can deny that event such as this needed to be revisited otherwise we will never learn and as the saying goes your past determines who you are.

A noteworthy event that has Mike Arroyo bragging about the coup plot they hatched and one of the first order of business for the new president was the exciting meeting with Lucio Tan among the first "esteemed" guest to grace the palace ….. we know what happened next, splashed in the newspaper Tan’s woes was gone like a stroke of a magic wand.

Then it was followed up by news of Kumpadre Bong Pineda conducting a meeting of all places in a national police headquarters in one of the regions….. as events unfolded the proclamation of Jueteng (illegal numbers game turning “simple” folks to instant millionaire making lotto winners look like paupers’ in comparison) Capital of the Philippines found its way and a niche in Pampanga.

We have seen some very “notable” project undertaken by the Edsa 2 beneficiary, one of which is a tribute to his father the late President Diosdado macapagal naming a highway in his honor that has earned the monicker of D. Macapagal Highway Robbery.

No one complained after all we are still giddy in celebrating a “victory” ousting the Asiong Salongat presidency of Estrada and hailing self confessed Jueteng bagman Chavit Singson a HERO………. So how dare anyone even take notice of that, we are busy dancing in the street with the Society of Seven’s rendition of Glady’s Knight and the Pips “dancing in the Street” without of course Glady’s but someone sounding like her. Oh wait, I don’t think they have Lani Misalucha yet but hey I am having a ball with this event so join in on the fun.

If there is anything that I would like to reminisce about this is the resilience and spirit of the people unfortunately used and abused as an unwitting pawn in a power grab what we now see unravelling in our very eyes is the reincarnation of Marcosa the little version..... nah I did not say there is a physical resemblance but the pattern points in that direction.

Is this a moment to be proud as a Filipino or a moment of shame to be buried in the thrash bin of Philippine pathetic political development? Ok, I should stop here lest people get upset but please mark your calendar and drop by the event as I can’t get off the heap of manmade garbage called Mt. Payatas a colossal monument akin to Mt. Rushmore symbolizing the neglect and abuse heaped on our nation by fooliticians wallowing in mismanagement and corruption.
You can also blog about this and use the image above and they may even feature your blog entry..... so go ahead and check it out.
