WE OUGHT NOT TO FORGET!

The clear and present danger sign is blinking all over again and this time; it seems accompanied by the anguished wailing of a woman in pain.

No, I am not talking about a fire in the neighborhood but something worse than that. If my fear is right, what ever Abalos, Lintang Bedol and all that is wrong about the last election in Maguindanao had failed to do, selfish interests (as differentiated from self-interest) might have infected some of our elected ILUSTRADO leaders and won the day for the current administration. I meant to refer to the sudden emergence of Manny Villar, Chiz Escudero, Alan Peter Cayetano and Francis Pangilinan as members of the MAJORITY PARTY at the New Senate. Villar appeared to coalesce with administration senators and convinced these three young senators to join him.

If I remember it right, these people rode on the crest of the people's rejection of and repugnance to the national policies of the sitting President. The people opted to express their strong disapproval to the current administration by rejecting almost all of its national candidates but for Ed Angara and Joker Arroyo, while Administration's local bets swamped the Opposition almost all over the country. Migs Zubiri's case is an exemption not because he, like Angara and Joker Arroyo, had been rewarded by the Filipino People with their affection. He was not. His stellar rise to national leadership seems to be by the grace (or disgrace) of the Comelec Chair, Abalos and his pawn, Lintang Bedol, the Emir of Maguindanao.

As the images of Villar and our 3 young and emerging political leaders, breaking bread with the administration senators at the Upper House, played in my mind, I could not help but recall what the imminent Filipino historian, Renato Constantino, said about one of the reasons why the Philippine revolution did not mature into fruition. He said, it was the copout of our Intellectual Class that did the Filipino revolution after we defeated our Iberian masters.

I have always learned to listen to what people say with a grain of salt as words are as easily given as fast as they are uttered. As my late father had said, SA ISANG MAY PAGKATAO, SAPAT NA ANG ISANG SALITA BAGAMAT ANG ISANG PAGKATAO AY HINDE NABUBUO SA SALITA LANG KUNDI SA GAWA. Indeed, what matters most is what one does with what comes out from one's mouth. But it is also true that to wait and see how these four would stand as Opposition senators while being members of the Majority Party in the Senate is no different from having Quezon, Osmena, Romulo et. al. to become part of the Japanese Puppet Government in the Philippines during the last war and STILL FEEL SAFE about the future of the Philippines during those times! For the Filipino People to simply maintain their trust in and allow these 4 senators to join the administration candidate after they accepted our trust and confidence when we elected them as Opposition Senators, is for us to agree to act like a moth that flies around a candle flame! It is a fool who locks his barn door ONLY after his horse was stolen.

Suddenly, it seemed to me that the brilliance of some stars in heaven has grown dimmed. Suddenly, I hope my fears this time are truly unfounded. But as we look back, do you think that Manny Villar et. al. could have inspired the Filipino People, as they earlier did, to go out of their way and be extra-vigilant during the last election had they told the public that they would join the Administration block in the Senate after the election? Do you think these 4 would still be able to garner their winning number of votes had they told the Filipino People that they would realign with the Administration after the election? Do we really believe that Escudero, Cayetano and Pangilinan are seasoned enough politicians to have the fortitude to withstand the largess from a dying regime that brooks at nothing and is willing to do anything if only to save its neck from the gallows of truth? Do they have that MATURITY AND CHARACTER to provide them sufficient strength and wisdom to discern and choose what is right for all OVER that which is merely good for the majority of our people? Do you think that the good intentions of Villar and most especially that of Escudero, Cayetano and Pangilinan, in joining the Administration block at the Senate, are sweet enough to erase the odious smell and almost acid taste left in the mouth of the Filipino People, who trusted them with their hope for a better Philippines, when they realigned with the Administration

block, whose minions, as of this writing, are still earnestly trying to move heaven and earth to impose their will on the whole nation?

What ever intentions prompted Villar, Escudero, Cayetano and Pangilinan to reached their decision, they owe the FILIPINO PEOPLE, who put them where they are now, a great deal of explanation why, in the light of a clear day, they realigned themselves with the administration senators! Many of our people went out of their way, exposing their lives and limbs to danger, if only to insure that the protest votes they gave these candidates during the last election could be counted. A number of these people were hurt and some were even killed during that exercise. By their blood and sacrifice, they have sanctified the results of the last election. For that matter alone, Villar et. al. should not trifle with what was entrusted to them by the Filipino people.

For Manny Villar, Chiz Escudero, Alan Peter Cayetano and Francis Pangilinan, you should have learned a thing or so from your recent victory.

For the Filipino People, it is never too late to learn from our mistakes. WHAT EVER HAPPENS HEREAFTER, WE OUGHT NOT TO FORGET!!!!!!!

hmmm.... i never really liked politics... my head hurts, dumbfounded when i read articles regarding the current crisis. but to be aware is a plus, so, i still get to read reactions, and current events. however, i maybe one of those that know not much about the issue at hand, but if i were to choose, i would have voted (but i chose not to register) for villar, pangilinan, escudero, and cayetano, not because they were once in the opposition (or is in the opposition) but because i see them as an asset for the government (our government not the government that is embodied in gloria alone). i see them as someone who would be helping our nation (or so at least). does it really matter if they are in the opposition or not? when they are still under the same government anyway...

but then again... im just an observer, not a vigilante. and i don't know much.

ah... politics is a chaotic world. maybe they've changed. maybe not. if they are to do good, they ought to be, wherever and on whatever position they maybe.

just my two cents.

Andianka, I understand you. I truly emphatize with you. But there is nothing wrong about being a vigilante as long as you are one for what is RIGHT for all. I know of some Filipinos who do not want to be involve at all with what is happening here in the Philippines and who are more interested in saving the whales in Rhode Island. Yet, they said they felt so deeply hurt(and they could stop talking about it) every time they are reminded by some Asians that the Philippines is now the most corrupt country in SEA. Their fate, if I may say so, is no different from the fate of those who, when their opportunity comes, would rather curse the darkness than light a candle.

Now regarding, the 4 senators.

I voted for them, too, not only because they are good and competent but because I thought that they are also strongly for what is right for the people during this troubled time of our nation.

The executive branch of our government has been assaulting the rights and welfare of the Filipinos to keep the sitting president in power in order for her to avoid her responsibility during the 2004 election. Our Lower House is nothing but one big expensive whore house. For a fee, it threw all senses of propriety and decency when it tried to mangle our constitution to keep this administration in power beyond 2010. You will agree with me that even a snake should not entrust her little ones with them after that.

It is therefore necessary that we have a strong Senate manned by people whom we think are truly concerned with the interest of our nation and our people. For this reason, our people overwhelmingly
elected 10 Opposition senators and two from the administration ticket hoping that we would have an Opposition controlled Senate to defend us from the rapine of the current administration.

Lo and behold! After winning, these 4 annointed ones decided to realign with administration candidates so that Villar could be the Senate president and all them would be in a more more advantageuos position than the rest for the 2010 election!

Could we not, FOR ONCE, forget our own little ambitions and take on the more noble cause of our country and people during this trying
time?

So once more, the Senate will be in the hands and control of the administration party while our people would continue to be ruled by law with all its consequences.

For us who elected Villar, Escudero, Cayetano and Pangilinan as our CHAMPIONS against the assaults of Imperial Malacanang, they are like the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse charging towards us from the horizon.

For truly, what is excellence, if they are without virtue?

i see... i may seem a bit slow, but i can't help but wonder. so far i understand, that their disloyalty had broken the people's expectation of a bigger opposing body in the Senate. but does it really jeopardize their ability to stand up to what is RIGHT because of it? would there really be a change of principle within these 4 senator elects?

andianka, you ask: does it really jeopardize their ability to stand up to what is RIGHT because of it?

would there really be a change of principle within these 4 senator elects?

I think it would jeopardize their ability as fiscalizers. We already know the seeds, must we still doubt the fruits they will bear?

The 4 have acted like mercenaries when they left the Opposition group and join the administration Senators, obviously to secure primarily their political fortunes in 2010. The administration candidates know that and they are not foolish NOT to take advantage of this crack, this WEAKNESS in the character of the 4 Senators.

Do you think the 4 would be able to withstand a more compelling temptation , say , one that would secure more and guarantee their political future in 2010? I don't.

Frankly, whether they have a change of character is simply moot , academic and totally immaterial now. If they do not desist in their intention to join the administration group, they will have this one momentous mistake in their political haunting them forever. They will always have to explain to the public why they did or did not do an act of public concern.

I just hope fate and history would be kind to them in that event.

Black & White Movement has initiated an email and fax campaign to pressure the GO senators to stick with the opposition which is the mandate they were given by the electorates.

The 4 senators who think they can whimsically shift their loyalties to this administration with questionable tenure better reconsider their actions or face repudiation by the electorates that voted them in that position.

From a few voice coming from Fidel and Gil we now see others like Enteng Romano coming out with the same sentiments....... pretty soon this will reverberate to those betrayed millions of voters that will spell their political doom.
