Be A Voice For Darfur, Help Stop the Genocide!

Watching "Scream Bloody Murder!" a CNN presentation on genocide hosted by Christiane Amanpour, one is drawn to a heartbreaking mind numbing audio visual on the savagery of genocide. Darfur is one of the places featured by CNN where after 6 years of mind numbing chaos people are still getting killed, women and children are getting raped, tortured like sub-humans, whole families are wiped out or driven out of their homes.

Sadly, the appalling genocide in Darfur continues – now in its sixth year and at the price of nearly half a million lives. Ironically, December 9th marks the 60th anniversary of the United Nations’ Genocide Convention, and Darfuri people are still suffering and struggling to survive. As the Obama administration ushers in a new era of foreign policy, this nation has an opportunity – an obligation – to aid our global neighbors in Darfur.

The Save Darfur Coalition’s "Be A Voice For Darfur" postcard campaign seeks to ensure that Darfur is a top priority for President-elect Obama, who has already promised “unstinting resolve” to end the Darfur Genocide. We aim for no less than 1 million postcards to be emailed and snail-mailed to President-elect) Obama within his first 100 days in office. Together we can make a difference to draw desperately-needed political attention to the ongoing genocide in Darfur.

Omar Hassan Ahmed Bashir Arrest Warrant Imminent for Darfur Genocide

According to news reports Sudanese President Omar Hassan Ahmed Bashir Arrest Warrant Imminent on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity? ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo, of Argentina seems intent on pursuing the case against Sudan’s president once an arrest warrant is granted will be a first one on a sitting president.

Cooper of Darfur Hell on Earth links an article from Washington Post with powerful and compelling images of Sudan, and links to Be a Witness site where one can send a form email to news network to give more news coverage on the genocide in Darfur.

A risky and bold proposition no doubt to have a strongman in the seat of power subjected to arrest warrant, how this unfolds remains to be seen. This early Sudan's U.N. ambassador, Abdalmahmood Abdalhaleem Mohamad may give us a glimpse of things to come, a response he says that will “destroy” the international efforts to reach a peace settlement in Darfur. He was further quoted in a Washington Post article titled Sudan Leader To Be Charged With Genocide, Some U.N. Officials Fear as saying:

"Ocampo is playing with fire," Mohamad said. "If the United Nations is serious about its engagement with Sudan, it should tell this man to suspend what he is doing with this so-called indictment. There will be grave repercussions."

Sounds like a threat but said response are to be expected from a criminal regime who instead of turning over Ahmed Haroun for his crimes was promoted to oversee humanitarian affairs for the people he is charged with helping displaced in Darfur. Quoting Bashir in a gathering of Sudan's Popular Defense Forces shows what ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo is up against:

I swear to God, I swear to God, I swear to God, we will not hand over any Sudanese to the International Court

Will there be more bloodshed? The problem is impunity will not be stopped unless ICC steps in to make a move to stop them on their tracts.

Stop the Genocide in Darfur!

US Congressional Committee Passes Darfur Accountability and Divestment Act that will now be up for voting in the general congress. Help stop the genocide in Darfur, Darfur: An Unforgivable Hell on Earth needs your help and cooperation this Monday, 30th of July, 2007 to call your US representatives to urge them to vote for the passage of H.R. 180.

The Darfur Accountability and Divestment Act. H.R. 180 would require the Secretary of the Treasury to establish a list of companies whose business activities in Sudan directly support the Sudanese Government. The measure also authorizes divestment by state and local governments and bans the federal government from contracting with companies on the Treasury list.

Help pass H.R. 180 and Call 1-800-436-6243 or visit the Anti-Genocide Hotline to urge your representative to co-sponsor the Genocide Accountability Act (H.R.2489).

Individuals who participated in the Rwandan and Bosnian genocides that have been identified by the US Justice Department and some of whom are living in the United States under false pretenses are able to escape prosecution.

Under current law, these individuals cannot be arrested or prosecuted, because they are not U.S. nationals and the genocides they perpetrated did not take place in the United States. The Genocide Accountability Act would close a legal loophole that prevents the United States from prosecuting individuals who are guilty of perpetrating genocide in foreign countries. The laws on torture, material support for terrorism, terrorism financing, hostage taking, and many other federal crimes allow for the United States to hold foreign nationals accountable.
